All India Kabaddi Tournament kicks off in Kanyakumari

The All India Kabaddi Tournament kicked off in Kanyakumari on the 27th of December 2020. The tournament is organized by St. Anthony Sports Club at the club's premises in Azhagappapuram. Having started on 27th, the tournament will go on till the 30th of December. Villagers use to conduct this tournament every year during Christmas vacation but it did not take place for about 25 years. The 2019 edition will be a special one as the tournament is taking place after such a long gap.

The tournament has garnered a lot of support from various people in the state. Er. APM Selvakumar, Chairman and Managing Director of APM Group of Companies, will be sponsoring the first prize of Rs. 1,50,000 for the men's category, while noted Film producer and director, P T Selva Kumar will be giving away prize money of Rs. 1,00,000 for the winning women's team. The second prize for the men's team will be Rs. 1,00,000 by Dr. S Ravi Chandran followed by the third and the fourth prize of Rs. 75,000 by J. M. Robin and Augustine Teacher Family respectively.

DMK Union Secretary of Radhapuram District, V.S.R. Jagadheesh has sponsored the second prize of Rs. 75,000 for women. A. Marshal and S. S. Mani are sponsoring the third and fourth prize of Rs. 50,000 respectively. Other prizes like State Level Match Prizes, Best Raiders, Best Catcher and Best All-Rounder will also be given out at the end of the tournament for both men's and women's categories.  

Youths of this village decided to revive this old tradition and restarted this tournament in 2017 in its new avatar. St. Antony's club gets support from villagers living abroad, UAE, Japan, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and many local sponsors comes together to make this event successful.

The tournament has participation from the teams of SSB Haryana, Periyar Boys Erode, Central Railways Mumbai DIV, Durai Singam Thoothukudi, Mahindra and Mahindra, SAV, JK Academy, Kasargod, Azhagai Rejo Printers, ITB Police Delhi, and Azhathankarai in the men's categories. 

The women's side has Kurukshetra University Haryana, Best & Co. Coimbatore, Shiksha Bharathi UP, Madurai, Northern Railway, Kabaddi Stars, SSB Haryana, Vel Tech Chennai, SMVKC, Central Railways Mumbai DIV, Sports Authority of India Haryana, and Jayachitra Tiripur.
