Early Life & Family
Nitesh Kumar was born and raised in a village in Haryana’s Rohtak district. Initially, he was passionate about cricket and spent most of his time playing with a cricket bat. His journey into kabaddi began quite unexpectedly when he was around 13 years old and weighed approximately 40 kilograms.
“I was about 13, weighed around 40 kilos, and just followed my friends to the Kabaddi ground,” Nitesh recalled. “I lost my first match — I don’t even remember the score. But something clicked. I knew this was it.”
The transition from cricket to kabaddi was not smooth, but Nitesh Kumar had the complete support of his family throughout his journey. His family initially found it hard to believe when he got selected for the Pro Kabaddi League at just 17-18 years old. They questioned how someone so young could be selected for such a big platform.
Behind Nitesh Kumar’s success was his coach Ramesh Kumar, a strict disciplinarian from a nearby village who also served as an officer in the Haryana Police. Under his guidance, Nitesh began to train seriously and developed his defensive skills in local tournaments.
Domestic Career
Nitesh Kumar’s domestic career began in local tournaments across Haryana, where he learned defensive techniques by observing senior players. His kabaddi journey started on mud surfaces during his school days when he saw his classmates playing the sport.
“It started when I was in school, saw many of my friends were playing kabaddi and I thought why not try it. Slowly, my interest grew and that was the time when I started watching Pro Kabaddi, which made me love this sport even further,” Nitesh explained.
The major breakthrough in his domestic career came during the Yuva Kabaddi Series in 2022. Playing for Periyar Panthers, Nitesh Kumar impressed everyone by accumulating 30 tackle points in eight games during the Monsoon edition. This performance caught the attention of Pro Kabaddi League scouts and marked his transition from domestic to professional kabaddi.
His big break came in Haryana’s Mahendragarh, where a strong performance finally caught the eye of PKL scouts. This was the turning point that led to his selection in the Pro Kabaddi League.
PKL Journey
Nitesh Kumar’s Pro Kabaddi League journey began in 2023 when Tamil Thalaivas selected him under the New Young Player (NYP) category for Season 10. He made his debut against Dabang Delhi K.C. in a packed stadium in Ahmedabad.
His debut was memorable as he was substituted into the match just as Naveen Kumar stepped in to raid. “The crowd, the lights — it was surreal. But when I caught the Naveen Express, it was like all the nerves disappeared. I felt like I belonged,” Nitesh remembered.
During his debut season (Season 10), Nitesh spent most of his time on the bench and had limited playing opportunities. In his debut campaign, he scored only 4 tackle points and 1 Super Tackle. However, this experience motivated him to work harder.
The real transformation came in Season 11 (2024). Nitesh doubled down on his training and preparation, which paid off significantly. He not only broke into the starting seven for Tamil Thalaivas but also emerged as one of the best defenders of the season.
In Season 11, Nitesh played 22 matches and earned 79 total points, with 77 tackle points being his major contribution. He achieved 74 successful tackles, which was the second-highest in the season. His consistency was remarkable as he completed 8 High 5s, the most by any defender in Season 11.
One of his standout performances came against Puneri Paltan, where he completed a High 5 to beat the PKL 10 Champions. “That match was special. The pressure, the atmosphere — it brought the best out of me,” he said.
Throughout Season 11, Nitesh produced memorable tackles against top raiders including Pardeep Narwal, Maninder Singh, Ajit Chouhan, Neeraj Narwal, and Akash Shinde. His defensive skills turned the mat into a fortress for Tamil Thalaivas.
