Early Life & Family

Rahul Sethpal was born on September 20, 2001, in the small village of Bapulia in Panipat district of Haryana. He comes from a middle-class family where education was given high importance. His father wanted him to focus on his studies rather than sports. However, his mother became his biggest supporter and believed that sports could give him good opportunities in life.

Rahul Sethpal’s journey in kabaddi started in a very simple way. He was very young when a tournament was organized in his village. The organizers were giving away jerseys to participants. This attracted young Rahul to join the tournament. “I was very young when I started playing Kabaddi. A tournament was organized in our village, and they were giving away jerseys. So, I decided to play – that’s how my journey in Kabaddi began,” recalls Rahul.

Rahul Sethpal has an elder brother named Sagar Rawal Gujjar, who is also a kabaddi player. The family faced some financial challenges in the early days, but they never gave up on supporting Rahul’s kabaddi dreams.

Domestic Career

Before joining the Pro Kabaddi League, Rahul Sethpal made his mark in domestic kabaddi competitions. His breakthrough came when he won two gold medals at the Junior National Kabaddi Championships in 2020 and 2021. These victories were special because his team was not expected to win medals.

“Looking at our team, it seemed unlikely that we would win a medal. We had only two raiders, along with five defenders. I wasn’t a main player; I filled in at different positions,” Rahul Sethpal remembers about his Junior Nationals success. Against all odds, they secured the gold medal while representing Sports Authority of India.

Rahul Sethpal also represents Services in domestic competitions. In December 2024, he helped Services win the 71st Senior National Kabaddi Championships. The final was a nail-biting match against Railways that went to a tie-breaker, with Services winning 30-30 (6-4). Rahul’s defensive partnership with Jaideep Dahiya proved crucial in this victory.

Rahul Sethpal’s Pro Kabaddi League journey began in Season 8 (2021) when he was signed by U Mumba. His first big moment came when he successfully tackled league superstar Pawan Sehrawat. “I was thrilled; I had tackled the league’s top raider! This performance caught his team’s attention and marked the beginning of his professional journey,” says Rahul.
