Pushpa Rana was born on January 11, 1998, in Millah village in the Shillai area of Himachal Pradesh’s Giri Par region in Sirmaur district. She is 27 years old. She comes from an academically inclined family where her father, Jaipal, works as a teacher and is also well-versed in kabaddi. Her mother is Srimathi Champadevi. She has a brother named Sanjeev who is also a kabaddi player.
Early Kabaddi Career
Pushpa started learning kabaddi from her father, Jaipal, and her brother Sanjeev during her early years. Her family provided her with strong support and guidance in the sport. She played kabaddi at various levels including school, college, district, state, and national competitions. Her coaches and mentors over the years have included her father, Indrathakur, Gyarsingh Negi, Meher Singh Burma, and currently Pankaj Sharma and Satvir Kaur at SAI in Dharamshala.
Playing Style and Skills
Pushpa plays as a Right Raider and is known for her versatility in both raiding and defending. She is particularly skilled at securing Bonus points and executing the Handtouch technique with finesse. Her balanced approach to the game makes her a valuable player in the Indian team.
International Achievements
In 2019, Pushpa represented India in the South Asian Championships held in Nepal, gaining valuable international experience. Her biggest achievement came in 2022 at the Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China, when she was part of the Indian women’s kabaddi team that won the gold medal. The team defeated Chinese Taipei in a closely contested final with a score of 26-25. This victory was particularly significant as it was India’s 100th medal at the Asian Games.
Education and Personal Life
Despite being a professional athlete, Pushpa continues to pursue her studies. She is currently pursuing a degree in History and aspires to earn a Master’s degree. This commitment to both sports and academics shows her dedication to personal growth. She is 168 cm tall (5.51 feet).
Current Status
Pushpa Rana has been appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian women’s kabaddi team for the 2nd Women’s Kabaddi World Cup 2025, which will be held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from November 17 to 24, 2025. Ritu Negi will serve as the captain. The team is being coached by Tejaswini Bai (Head Coach) and Kavita Selvaraj (Assistant Coach). India aims to defend its title as defending champions, having won the inaugural Women’s Kabaddi World Cup in 2012.
